This PDD theme is…

Managers are faced with one question: Are we doing things right?
Leaders are faced with one question: Are we dong the right things?
Accountability goes like this: “You are not evaluated by the obstacles you overcome but by the results you achieve.”

The book?

The Effective Executive in Action: A Journal for Getting the Right Things Done, by Peter Drucker

Here is what Publishers Weekly had to say:

The Effective Executive in Action is a journal based on Peter F. Drucker’s classic and preeminent work on management and effectiveness — The Effective Executive. Here Drucker provides you with a guide to effective action — the central theme of Drucker’s work. The format extracts bullet points from the original text, along with supplementary material from other Drucker writings, then adds reinforcing questions and suggested action items. Additional space is provided to write down reflections and results. “Decision making is the specific activity of the executive,” Drucker writes, but before you can learn how to make the right decisions, you need to manage your work time and concentrate your focus on the right tasks, then develop your strengths and the strengths of those around you. The Effective Executive in Action will teach you how to be a better leader and how to lead according to the five main pillars of Drucker’s leadership philosophy.

This book is EASY to read yet CHALLENGING to implement. And here is your choice. You could buy, read and study the 20+ books and 50+ articles Drucker wrote on executive effectiveness OR just get a copy of this book and get the essence of Drucker’s wisdom. Kinda like the Cliff Notes for your own personal effectiveness.
Join me and others in a lively discussion.  Let me know ASAP if you will attend. Here’s the link to amazon

In times of change the Learners will inherit the Earth, while the Learned will find themselves fully prepared for a world that no longer exists.

2009 Leader Effectiveness Training

December 4, 2008
Leader Effectiveness Training (L.E.T.) Schedule

January 6, 13, 20, 27,  February 3.  8:30-11:00am
Leadership Horizons office in Carmel, IN

Leader Effectiveness Training

“When you speak you lead” Leaders know that it takes more than technical ability and business savvy to be successful. The ability to communicate and deal with conflicts effectively is equally if not more important.
I’ve been working with managers, leaders, and execs for more than 20 years and if I could name one skill that would improve a leader’s effectiveness it would be communications; broadly defined as the ability to clearly state one’s mind, listen in a way that encourages dialogue, resolve conflicts effectively, and solve problems so they stay solved. These skills are fundamental for the effective executive, but all too often overlooked and underdeveloped.  This program is not another soft skills training workshop but a rigorous training experience that first improves your critical thinking and self awareness and then your ability to communicate effectively.
What You Will Learn L.E.T. teaches a concrete, actionable set of tools and skills that reduce conflict in the workplace, increase time on task and measurably reduce the costs of people problems.
Through L.E.T., you’ll learn, practice, and understand when and how to apply a powerful set of tools that measurably influence your employee’s behaviors, habits and beliefs. The result is a more productive, efficient and fulfilling workplace.

I love a good quote

A good quote captures a thought in a unique, compelling, and memorable way. I’ll post quotes here from time to time that stimulate conscious thinking. I hope you will also.

Ron’s WeeklyWhack!

October 19, 2008

The WeeklyWhack (WW) is a periodic post (I was lying about the weekly part) that will give you a “whack in the side of the head.” Sometimes irreverent, sometimes spiritual, sometimes illogical (on the surface anyway) but always stimulating and thought provoking. (It, is also anything I like that strikes me as a novel way to look at life, management, organizations, or the entrepreneurial spirit!)

WW is NOT a “self-help” or “feel good” message. WeeklyWhack IS about “creating” and “transformation.” About motivating you to bring something into existence that is uniquely YOU. Something that does not exist now. It is about transforming the belief patterns you have about yourself that limit your life, your career, your relationships, and your ability to lead and create the life you want.

WeeklyWhack will draw on many resources and will present you with a provocative idea, concept or point of view. My emphasis will be on “pithy brevity.” Something with a lot of meat communicated quickly. All the messages can be read in 60-90 seconds.

My intent is to stimulate you to be more aware of what you’ are doing, thinking, and feeling so you can be more “intentional” about what you are doing, thinking, and feeling! So return often to this category for your WeeklyWhack.
